First Impressions: Is This Even a Laptop?
When you first see the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, it's hard not to be impressed. It's a gadget that makes you say "wow." Huawei calls it a laptop, but it's so different from what we usually think of as a laptop. It has an 18-inch screen that folds in half. You can use half the screen for watching videos or doing other things, and then you can attach a keyboard to the other half, turning it into a laptop. It's a pretty amazing setup.
Design and Weight
The MateBook Fold Ultimate Design has a really nice look and feel. The vegan leather finish feels good to the touch, and there's a subtle Huawei logo on the front. It comes in three colors: white, black, and a light blue. The device is also surprisingly light, weighing just 1.16 kg. When it's closed, it's 14.9 mm thick, and when it's open, it's only 7.3 mm thick. Huawei made it so thin by using a special ultra-thin circuit board and a three-layer aluminum structure. This keeps everything compact but still strong.
Looking around the device, you'll find two USB Type-C ports, a power button that also works as a fingerprint reader, and four vents for cooling. It also has a six-speaker sound system and four microphones. It comes with a built-in stand and works with both a virtual keyboard and a physical keyboard that's only 5 mm thick.
Display Details
The display on the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design is really clear. It's an 18-inch 3K resolution, double-layer flexible LTPO OLED display. It has a great aspect ratio and can get very bright, up to 1600 nits. The screen also supports HDR10+ and is designed to be easy on your eyes, with Eye Comfort 3.0 certification. It has a 1440 Hz PMW dimming rate and a 120 Hz refresh rate. When you fold it into laptop mode, the screen size becomes 13 inches. If you use the whole display as a tablet, it's the full 18 inches.
When the display is folded, especially with a dark background, the fold line isn't very noticeable. On a white background, it's more visible, but it doesn't feel bad. The edges around the screen aren't too wide either, which is good.
Virtual and Physical Keyboard
One of the cool things about this device is how the keyboard works. If you press both hands on the lower half of the display, a virtual keyboard appears, and the 18-inch screen turns into a 13-inch laptop layout. Some people might not like using a virtual keyboard, so Huawei also gives you the option to use a physical keyboard. You can place this physical keyboard on the lower half of the screen, and it works like a regular laptop. The physical keyboard has its own battery and needs to be charged separately. Also, when you're using the physical keyboard, the laptop can't be folded completely shut. It will resist and even make a beeping sound to let you know.
Battery and Charging
The Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design has a 74.69 Wh battery. It supports 140-watt fast charging through the USB Type-C port. For connecting to other devices, it has Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
Specs and Price
It's a bit strange, but Huawei hasn't said what processor is inside the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design yet. The laptop runs on HarmonyOS 5 right out of the box. It comes with 32GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage. There's also another version with 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.
Camera
This laptop has an 8 MP front camera. You can use it for video calls, online classes, and taking photos. It's a useful feature for meetings and other online activities.
